El dia de amistad
We can´t believe it´s been almost a week already! After landing on Guatemalan soil, we were promptly settled into a cozy camp on the hillside with views of a little colonial city nestled between two volcanoes that seemed to dance with the tireless clouds and provide us with endless entertainment. As a group, we spent our first few days getting oriented as we acclimatized to the tropical mountain landscape. At 6000 feet, our students became clearer about their intentions for the trip and came up with some agreements they would abide by to help support everyone in achieving their goals. They also learned how to stay healthy and safe and, shortly after, put this knowledge to use during their scavenger hunt in Antigua. It was a great success as they all came back with interesting conversations with local folks, poignant observations, and deeper questions about the context they are apart of. Since then, we have transitioned on to Pasac, a small Mayan community, where the students stay solo in the homes of loving host families. Together, we eat all our delicious meals made by the hand of their new family members. Though we may not have a complete vocabulary to express our gratitude, tell our stories, and ask theirs, we continue making progress building relationships with them and the members of our own temporary traveling tribe. And as we write this, we can hear squeals and laughter from the salon where the students have been playing games on our first rainy night.
We hope everyone we left behind is well, for we love you and miss you.
