Kabale

After a short ride to cross the border, we got to Kabale, Uganda. We made our way to the Edirisa hostel to get our bearings of the town. “The Nest” aka the lounge was our hot spot. Finding the best carrot cake in town at the Royal Cafe, we chowed down and then split into two groups for the remainder of the week. We bought all our food at the market and headed our separate ways. Over the next 8 days, we split our time between two locations; Bukinda and Kitanga.

Bukinda: We met Maria and Johanna who are volunteers for a few months. Group Avy performed a puppet show for the kids reminding them that handwashing is important. We also did garden work, planting carrots and spinach. Group Niko painted all seven continents in the nursery school.

Kitanga: The Special Needs School is located here. There are currently 59 students with a variety of disabilities. Both groups were provided blank slates aka the dining hall walls to make beautiful with murals. Flowers were the theme, as well as bumblebees and rainbows. Group Avy also painted a globe with children and our hand prints around it. The kids were so excited. There were a few kids that really touched our hearts. Rebecca believed everyone was her personal jungle gym. Peter is Peter. There really is no other way to describe him expect he gets super excited and smiles with all of his teeth. Joel didn’t really have boundaries. He was especially drawn to the boys, copying their style and swag.

Back in Kabale here and there, we discovered Julius, King of the Rolex, and chocolate donuts from the Little Ritz bakery.

And off to Lake Bunyoni we went.
