This past week we had the opportunity to spend time learning about the culture and community of Miloli’i. We met many different people throughout the community such as Wes and Bobo, Auntie Lynda, Auntie Laila, Uncle Ted, and Uncle Ka’imi. We also met a lot of the kids who live in the community as well.

Our Top Three Highlights of the Week:

This past week in Miloli’i we had many moments worth cherishing. One example from this week was playing with the local kids. Another highlight from this week was snorkeling at the wharf and spotting a reef shark. A final highlight that we will cherish forever was dinner with the community on our last night. We got to reflect on our stay and the things that we learned.

But transformation always comes with opportunities for growth: What were our main challenges this week?

Something that the group was challenged by this week was the weather. We experienced a wind and rain storm that wasn’t as intense as what we endured in Olowalu. Although, the wind was loud at night which made sleeping difficult and some items in tents got wet.

What has surprised you about your host community, culture, or destination?

One thing that surprised us about the community we stayed in was how close everyone was. Miloli’i takes the phrase ‘it takes a village’ quite literally. Everyone is so friendly and more then welcoming to help anyone in need. Everyone there is one big family, despite not all being related. They all care about each other and protect each other at any cost.

Until next time 👋 The Aloha Semester
