Salutations to our beloved fans! My, what a week it has been! Following a challenging week at Re-Green, we returned to Athens for the afternoon. After dropping our bags off at the AirBnB, the very stinky group scurried over to the trusty laundromat, followed by lunch at our favorite souvlaki place (for the 100th time). The group then went their separate ways- some of the group went thrifting, others visited a stationary store to re-up on journaling and drawing essentials. The group stayed in for dinner and watched How to Train Your Dragon, before heading off to bed for some much needed shut-eye.
It was time to say goodbye to Greece and move on to our next destination: Italy! From the quiet and laid back mountain village in Crete, to the hustle and bustle of Athens, to the calm and secluded Re-Green experience, our time in Greece was filled with the most wonderful and memorable experiences. By 5 AM the following morning, we were out the door and on our way to the airport. One party van, one plane, two train rides, two metro stops, and one exhausting 7-hour bus ride later, we had finally arrived in Italy’s oldest city: Matera. For the next two weeks, are staying at a beautiful little farm in the Italian countryside called Masseria la Fiorita. The sleepy group trudged through the doorway of the house and we were beyond ecstatic to see that we were all living in the same room for the next couple of weeks. What could possibly go wrong!
The next few days consisted of touring the farm, mooing contests with the cows, and working through the sweltering heat to find a hidden water spring in the hillside. One night, we went to town and met up with a small group of European teens (yes they exist) and talked about all things Europe. A few days later, we enjoyed a winding hike through the ancient caves and hills surrounding Matera, led by our excellent tour guide, Ivan. After the hike, we had the opportunity to wander around the city of Matera, finally getting a taste of a historic Italian city. Arguably the greatest challenge our group has faced thus far (aside from sleeping next to someone else’s stinky winky feet), has been having to cook and clean for ourselves without fighting each other, but sometimes all it takes is one fight night to alleviate tension. The past couple of days, we have started to learn Italian, which has proven to be much easier to pick up compared to Greek. After two days of lessons, the group’s favorite word is “scoreggiare”, which is still subject to change. Overall, our time in Italy is off to a fantastic start and we cannot wait to see what the rest of Italy has in store for us! Listed below are some group superlatives for you to get a better idea of individual group members. Enjoy!
