We started our second week at Bona Fide with the celebration of Halloween! After a morning of hard work, we participated in a scavenger hunt and made scarecrows with materials from the around the farm. Thanks to Brittany, one of the scarecrows was lucky enough to wear a nice shirt signed by Queen B herself. Later on in the evening, the group settled in the meeting room (the Aula) with oreos, chips, and soda to watch the Princess Bride.
Throughout the week, we all felt sick at one point or another, but were able to power through. Whether is was cutting up carrots in the kitchen or digging for worms in the compost, we were able to provide a lot of help around the farm. Thanks for David and his computer, there were glimpses of the World Series finale. The majority of the nights this week consisted of Bananagrams and all the delicious treats we found in nearby Santa Cruz.
Without access to the internet on the farm, we were given a great opportunity to mingle with the volunteers and local staff, read, write, and draw–a chance to refocus on the present moment. Y’all are still great back home, though 😉
One of our workshops was making baskets in the community with a man named Don Fidel. The materials are brought down from Volcan Maderas. A couple of us even returned to make another basket. We all agreed it was worth carrying them through the airports… They’re going to make great Christmas presents!
It was another fantastic week spent outside, sweating and experiencing farm life. We are grateful for this opportunity, and looking forward to one more week of homestays and language school!
