I’d say my most memorable experience was the one that came to mind when asked the question. It’s not very crazy or incredibly interesting but it has value to me. So, we were hiking in the sierra maestra, visiting places where both Fidel and Che had established a “centro” or headquarters in English. The group separated into squads by pace, as most hikes devolve to, and I found myself without anyone in both directions for quite some distance. I quickly made some rash decisions and found myself lost. Being lost in the Sierra Maestra made me realize I did not want to be lost in the sierra maestra. About a half an hour passed and I began to lose hope of finding my way through this forest that reminded me of Cambodia/Vietnam. I felt panic sprinkle into my veins and my brain lapsed into frenzy. I wished I had listened when Dave and Amanda told us where we were going, I wished I wasn’t so dang hot, I wished I had talked to our guide Miguel about Tool, I wished that I could think in a way that was less anaphoric. Then, like an unearthed treasure chest, I was found by our guide Miguel. I was lucky to have Miguel by my side, I was lucky to no longer be lost in the sierra maestra, and I was lucky to see all my great group member friends waiting for me on some knob somewhere in the sierra maestra…
