England, Scotland, & The Netherlands

We’ll dive deep into the adventure and exploration that make these lands so captivating. London, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam offer a thrilling mix of historic charm and modern energy, each city providing a unique backdrop for cultural immersion and discovery. From these world-class cities, we’ll venture into the picturesque countryside to hike, bike, canoe, adventure, and learn! Along the way, we’ll travel off the beaten path to explore the region and connect with communities working to address today’s most pressing issues.

England: In iconic London, where historic landmarks meet hip neighborhoods and stunning architecture, you’ll immerse yourself in the city’s dynamic energy. Explore bustling markets, historic sites, art galleries, and festivals that showcase a perfect blend of the old and the new. London isn’t just a destination; it’s an experience. Engage with the local culture through creative workshops and community projects, unwind in lush parks, cycle through Hyde Park, and uncover hidden gems in trendy areas like Shoreditch.

The English countryside offers a tranquil contrast to the fast-paced city life. Travel by train to charming towns where you’ll stay in manor houses and experience a slower, more sustainable way of living. But don’t be fooled by the slower pace—the countryside also offers activities that will get your heart racing.

Scotland: In Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, dramatic landscapes meet rich history. Ancient castles overlook winding medieval streets, while the city’s vibrant arts scene and welcoming atmosphere make it a hub for adventure. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, hike up Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views, and experience the warmth of Scottish hospitality in local pubs and cafes.

The Scottish countryside is equally breathtaking, and we’ll take time to hike through its famed landscapes. Journey to the northernmost coast to visit a world-renowned ecovillage that has been at the forefront of sustainable living for decades. Here, you’ll learn about innovative approaches to sustainability while soaking in the rugged beauty of Scotland’s wilderness.

The Netherlands: Amsterdam, with its picturesque canals and dynamic energy, seamlessly blends tradition with innovation. Known for its artistic heritage, cutting-edge design, and progressive outlook, Amsterdam is a city where creativity thrives. Stroll through charming streets, visit world-class museums, and engage with forward-thinking communities dedicated to sustainability and social inclusion.

Beyond the city, the Dutch countryside—dotted with cows, windmills, and cheese farms—provides a scenic backdrop for a beautiful bike ride. As you pedal through this idyllic landscape, you’ll discover the simplicity and charm of rural life in the Netherlands.

This journey is more than just an adventure; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and natural beauty of these incredible countries while gaining the tools and inspiration to become an agent of change.

Climate Nutritional Facts

Being aware of our footprint is a great first step.  Learning what to do about it, is ahead.  To start mitigating the extra carbon of your trip, students are encouraged to consider eating a low-meat diet, purchasing locally-made green products, using public transit where available, and talking to their local community and politicians about climate change.

During this program students will "inset" much of their carbon through volunteer projects. Students will eat and drink from typically immediately local sources, staying in housing that supports local entrepreneurs and communities, and learning about ways to better the environment that can be taken home.

This is consistently a favorite week for students!

Questions We'll Explore:

  • How are challenges interconnected?  What role did colonization play in modern day crises?  How might solutions be interconnected?  How can a holistic approach work on intersectional issues?
  • What challenges are communities facing specific to climate change, and how are they addressing this issue?
  • What are current governmental and non-governmental responses to challenges?  What is the role of government vs. grassroots?  How do they compare in the UK and the Netherlands?
  • How can we be agents of change?  What inner work needs to happen? What outer action needs to be taken?

Carpe Diem Education’s UK and the Netherlands semester gets you off the mainstream path as you explore the heart of Northern Europe, while connecting you to inspiring people and getting you to think about your own journey as a change maker.  By focusing on the resilience and regeneration of communities and the land, we learn not only about the current problems,  but also the proactive and life-affirming ways that we can overcome current and future challenges.
