Last Week In Guatemala

“Goodbye Guatemala” Dinner!

Written By Lucina & Cece

After a bit of a lengthy trek over to Laquin/Samuc Champey, we started the first day off strong by tubing the crystal clear waters of the land. Before we even got to the main activity we happened upon a rope swing chair where we leaped into the water. Needless to say it set the day off on the right foot. We started relaxing through the current with some stunning views of the surrounding nature, though the current picked up quick and we found ourselves in rapids. Some fell in, some stuck it though, but of course all had fun.

The next day we had originally planned a candle lit cave tour, unfortunately we were met with heavy rains and had to cancel our original plan due to safety risks, but when has shifted plans ever stopped our fun. If there’s one thing we know it’s how to adapt. Through asking the locals and sleuthing the inter web we were able to find a marvelous dry cave tour. The caves were absolutely stunning, totally the best replacement we could’ve asked for. The caves being so close to Lanqin gave us the perfect opportunity to explore a bit and pick up some snacks. Seems we’re the masters of going with the flow.

Tuesday was finally time to explore the true treasure of the trip, Samuc Champey. Unfortunately sickness got the best of some of us so they had to stay behind, but the rest of us made sure to enjoy for the fallen ones. We hiked up to the mirador to enjoy the extraordinary views and our yummy sandwiches. The end of the hike we happened upon the pools which were the most perfect treat after the long way down. Swimming in those waters was surreal, although little fishes kept nipping at us. Apparently they were like spa fish eating our dead skin, so I guess we can’t complain too much. After a day of adventure (which happened to be a bit chilly) we found the perfect cure, roasting “s’mores” by our hostels bon fire. Our s’mores consisted of cookies and chocolate/vanilla marshmallows found in the market, arguably much better than traditional ones. What a night to wrap up our first SDT destination.

After a long travel day to get to Antigua, we had dinner out and about before meeting back at the hostel for another Passion Class! We spent the evening in the kitchen, laughing as we made and ate cookie dough while learning a little bit of cookie science.

On Thursday, we had a nice relaxing morning, and after a home cooked lunch, some of us headed out to a nearby convent turned museum that has a long and tragic history. The rest of the day was spent apart, but many of us heard the excitement in the streets during a close soccer match between Guatemala and Panama. Unfortunately, we were missing some members of our group for these antics. Some people have been struggling with sickness and weren’t able to enjoy the fun and frenzy of our last few days in the country.

Most people were able to make a speedy recovery and on Friday the five chicas headed to a nearby animal sanctuary and rehabilitation center. We saw beautiful turtles and lizards, pet a few snakes and attempted conversation with some parrots. From there, the day was our own. Many people wandered around the city, admiring the art and culture and watching preparations for La Festival de Los Flores, which began the next day.

That night, after a very special “Goodbye Guatemala” dinner, we stayed out late dancing one last time. We even ran into some old friends from our travels while we were out enjoying the music and energy of Antigua.

Saturday was our last morning in Guatemala! We all set out separately, wandering the streets, enjoying all the liveliness and decoration that came with La Festival de Los Flores and buying any last minute souvenirs. Around 3 pm we were off! By tuktuks and by bus we made it to the airport, with only minor delays. After some struggles to check our bags and find an affordable dinner, we boarded our flight, caught our last glimpse of Guatemala out the plane window and set our sights on Costa Rica! We’re so excited to see what the next couple weeks hold, and while we are sad to say goodbye to this beautiful country, another adventure awaits in Costa Rica!
