Hello Carpe families,
Due to recent flooding in Thailand we have cut Bangkok out of the itinerary and decided to come to Cambodia a day early. After a brief stop in Khorat and a eight hour bus ride we arrived at the border in the city of Poi Pet. With our tactful leaders, we were able to elude the sketchy scams that were happening all around us.
We then took a short government bus-shuttle to the main bus station and boarded a four-hour bus to Siem Reap. With our not so pleasant bus driver, our impressions of Cambodia were not so great. Our guesthouse, the “Popular Guesthouse”, was very nice. The nice gentleman arranged a gang of tuk-tuks (motorbikes with little seats being towed behind), and we woke up for the second morning in a row, before 5:00 a.m., to see sunrise at Ankor Wat. We arrive at the Wat in the dark and waited with the crowds for what was supposed to be amazing sunrise. Much to our dismay, it was cloudy and we couldnt see the iconic reflection of the Wat in the pool. After a day of touring around the surrounding Wats we returned to the main city and had the afternoon off. Siem Reap had a great night market and tasty food.
We left our guesthouse around 9:30 a.m. and this afternoon we arrived at what can only be reffered to as a “posh” hotel in Battambang. Dispite our first impressions of Cambodia, we have grown to love our time here.
We leave tomorrrow (after a buffet breakfast) at 9:30 a.m. for our service project.
Yours truly,
Roman Brockley
