Carpe Diem’s Technology Policy
Carpe Diem Education (CDE) creates transformational learning opportunities where students are present with themselves, each other, the places we travel, and our program partners. CDE has created the following policy with a commitment to mindful, intentional, and minimalist use of technology that supports increased self-awareness, improves situational risk awareness, cultivates a strong and present group culture, and limits social media.
Personal technological devices are not allowed during ANY intentional learning or community space. Examples include group meetings, group activities, hikes, group meals, Carpe Diem Lessons (CDLs), group meetings, structured reflection time, lectures, and any other times specified by OEs.
Minimum of 3 weeks ‘phone free.’ All CDE Programs begin with a phone-free orientation for the first 1-2 weeks. Other phone free weeks are identified by CDE and communicated to families in advance. During phone free weeks, cell phones will be held by CDE staff. Phone free weeks are scheduled in locations where students are encouraged to engage in nature and local communities: we strive to prioritize access to phones during urban travels, with the opposite for rural. Overseas Educators (OEs) may choose to implement additional “phone free” days at any time to avail unique opportunities, or mitigate group drama (eg, during a retreat). Additionally, the group will be encouraged to add phone-free weeks, frequently citing beneficial personal and group dynamics.
Cell Phones - We discourage the use of international plans and SIM cards - they can be expensive, isolating, and inequitable. Students will be taught how to download in areas where they have WiFi in order to remain present during the day.
Applications - Applications that show your approximate location (specifically dating apps, some social media settings, etc.), represent a safety concern for the group and individuals, and are thus not allowed.
Music, Photography, and e-Reading Devices - If desired, we encourage purchasing basic hardware without web browsing capabilities for use during phone free weeks. Our staff take pictures on their work phones that all participants are welcome to through shared Google Photos albums. Physical books are great and frequently are shared through the group, generating great conversations!
All Other Electronic Devices - Such as laptops, drones, gaming devices, Chromebooks, and other higher-ticket items are not allowed. They are a liability and are not needed during the program. Our staff carry a laptop that students can use if required for college applications or other essential needs.
Sustainability: We value sustainability and encourage you to smartly forego, or borrow gear from family members and friends rather than purchasing new items that will not be used beyond the program.
*Repeated violations of our Technology Policies could result in behavioral contracts and/or confiscation of a device until the end of the program.
