Student Policies & Expectations
- Violation of a Level One Policy will almost always result in dismissal from the program.
- Violation of a Level Two Policy has potential for immediate dismissal, but typically results in a B-Plan*.
- Continued violation of policies or B-Plans, will result in dismissal from the program.
LEVEL ONE
- No marijuana (THC or CBD), illegal drugs, or abuse of other medications. Abuse, misuse, or distribution of prescription and/or over-the-counter drugs are grounds for dismissal. This includes consumption, purchase, possession, or proximity to drugs that are illegal in the U.S.A. and/or any host countries.
- No alcohol without explicit permission of CDE Program Director. Some programs may have a pre-planned alcohol tasting experience. Outside of these specific pre-planned experiences, with direct supervision of CDE Overseas Educators, no alcohol consumption is allowed.
- No sexual misconduct or abuse of any kind. Sexual misconduct of any kind, bullying, or physical violence against another person, animal, or property are strictly prohibited and enforced.
- No unsanctioned activities, harmful behaviors, nor breaking the law. This includes riding (as a passenger or pilot) on motorcycles, ATVs, and mopeds; participating in unsanctioned adventure activities (such as skydiving or bungee jumping, etc.); nor ignoring curfews set by the Overseas Educators. This includes bringing unapproved visitors to shared student-housing, or exposing others to criminal activity.
LEVEL TWO
- Adherence to CDE’s tobacco policy. Our goal is to not create new tobacco users, nor establish a culture of tobacco use internally or externally to the group. CDE requires prior disclosure of tobacco use to support our goal. Tobacco use is expected to take place during personal time and away from non-users. Note: vaping is illegal in some countries where CDE travels, such as India, Thailand, Cambodia, and Australia to name a few.
- No unexcused absences. Students are expected to communicate their whereabouts proactively to their Overseas Educator: “missing person” protocols are exhaustive, cumbersome, and emotionally trying for everyone involved.
- I will challenge myself culturally, personally, and emotionally. This includes full participation in all aspects of the program as well as adherence to all policies.
- I will treat myself and others with respect and abide by all group agreements. This includes treating all members of my group, local contacts, and others I encounter with respect while traveling, regardless of race, culture, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or religion. This also includes culturally appropriate clothing/language, individual and shared space/belongings.
* Carpe Diem uses Collaborative Problem Solving to address behavioral issues. This involves a verbal or written B-Plan to identify challenging behavior, outline steps for correction, and clarify consequences. Written B-Plans involve parental notification and inclusion.
