We made it! The jet lag is diminishing, and we are beginning to
explore the wonders of this wild metropolis. Expect a blog from your
sons and daughters tomorrow, but we wanted to write briefly and assure
you that we are safe, sound, and not too sleep deprived…anymore that
is.
Some of you may have read about the “nation-wide” strikes called
across India yesterday. They were called by the opposition political
party in response to an announcement by the federal government that it
will open the Indian food market to major western retailers like
Walmart. Although transportation and some shops were shut down in
other parts of the country, it was life as normal in Delhi, the
country’s capital, and most other places in India from what we are
hearing here in country. In fact, life was so normal that we were not
even aware of the strike until we looked at the BBC this morning.
Transportation was running smoothly (or as smoothly as it ever runs in
one the world’s most populated cities) and most shops were open. For
us this meant a full day of riding around the city in rickshaws and
eating our first of many meals comprised of rice, dal, and curry.
Your sons and daughters are incredible! Thank you for sharing them
with us. After all the planning and preparation on everyone’s part
it’s a joy to finally be on this adventure with them.
Stay tuned to the blog for updates on our meanderings about the subcontinent.
Namaste to you all from Delhi.
