See-ya everyone!
It's been a little over a month since I arrived here in Cristuru Secuiesc, Romania. The first few days were extremely tough to say the least. Until three days ago I was the only volunteer in my program, working for the Child Protection Services, so it felt pretty lonely at first. However, I was lucky enough to make new friends who are part of the European Volunteer Service. I am working in a flat with nine children. My job is to organize activities and play with them from lunchtime until dinner. Everyone in this town speaks Hungarian, which is extremely hard to learn compared to Romanian, but thankfully the kids know a little bit of English. There is a lot of body language and gesturing involved with this job! As far as the country itself goes, I am crazy about it. With the weekends off, I often take trips with my friends to nearby cities. Traveling on the weekends has brought me to some realizations such as the fact that there is a church for every 10,000 people or so and a hospital for every 100,000 people. Last week I was hospitalized with a severe case of tonsillitis and I talked with one of the nurses who spoke a bit of English about this issue. She is Catholic, but feels the backlash of corruption and not enough funding for hospitals. However, there are so many great things about this country, too. The castles are magnificent and the "old towns" are beautiful beyond words. No… I haven't met any vampires yet, but I will see Dracula's castle this weekend when I visit Brasov. There is so much to see, but so little time!
I wish everyone back home all the best 🙂
With love,
Maggie
